Strategies for Helping HR Professionals Make the Business Case for HR in the Face of Reduced Funding
Countless studies of for-profit corporations have shown that there is a correlation between good talent management and financial results. These reports also reveal that top-performing talent management organizations—those that really get the purpose of strategic workforce planning, workforce development, and organizational effectiveness—posted earnings higher than their peer companies. While nonprofits don’t measure their success in terms of shareholder value or market share, at a time when many mission-driven organizations are fighting to prove their impact and value, this session will show you how and why to make the case for continuing to invest in HR – even in the case of reduced funding, donor contributions, and other financial support.

Survivors of Downsizing: People Management in Lean Times
While many organizations typically focus on the laid off employees, for nonprofits to stay the course, human resource personnel and leaders must focus on the needs of the survivors, investing more energy in the people who remain to aid recovery, fuel productivity, boost morale and minimize the damage to workplace trust and cohesion. In this workshop, human resource personnel learn about the unique impact of downsizing on nonprofit staff, become aware of the typical stages of this process of change, learn to assess potential emotional reactions of survivors, and train their leaders in people management strategies that demonstrate staff value. We will further discuss how leaders need to handle their own emotions as well as their staff’s reactivity, and help survivors and volunteers take care of themselves during transition.
