For more than 40 years the National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI) has been at the forefront in engaging leaders, policymakers, professionals, and parents around critical and timely issues that directly impact Black children and their families. With the support of a thriving Affiliate network in more than 20 communities across the country, NBCDI is committed to improving and advancing the quality of life for Black children and their families through education and advocacy.

As a leading force delivering results on behalf of children of color, NBCDI’s future is about growth and sustainability, forging new boundaries and promoting strengths-based programs and policies that lift up Black children in the context of their families, communities and cultures.

NBCDI seeks a savvy and highly engaged President and Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization toward the intended future growth and sustainability.  This Chief Executive position reports to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors and will provide leadership to the organization by charting the course for increased and lasting impact. The President/CEO is responsible for leading the organization by working with the Board to establish and effectively deliver on strategic goals and priorities. The Chief Executive provides thought-leadership, direction, and oversight of daily operations, fund development, and building and maintaining pivotal partnerships that advance NBCDI’s mission.

This innovative and transformational leader will modulate the organization’s voice, presence, and outcomes. The successful individual will have an opportunity to work collaboratively with the child welfare, education, funding and legislative communities, as well as with Affiliates across the country to ensure that the work of NBCDI remains relevant and fully supported as critical to the success of Black children and families.

Furthermore, the successful candidate must have an advanced degree and a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in a leadership and supervisory capacity with increasing levels of responsibility. The following experience is critical:

  • Substantive experience involving public policy issues that impact low-income children and families of color
  • Successful resource development experience, particularly within the foundation community
  • Demonstrated knowledge of historic and current issues related to promoting positive child health and development, family development, and educational outcomes

This position requires a proven ability to demonstrate business savvy and diplomacy when working with the a wide range of stakeholders who look to NBCDI for leadership, inspiration, and support for achieving their goals. These groups include parents, educators, administrators, community and political leaders, and child care providers. Deep relevant knowledge and keen ability to articulate and influence discussions regarding the aspirations, needs, and achievements of a national organization to a wide range of internal and external constituencies is essential. A broad network of relationships reaching into the various levels of government, national organizations, corporations, foundations, academic institutions, and national and local leaders who support the work of NBCDI is also required. Finally, the successful candidate must have dynamic leadership presence and a credible leadership voice.
