Job Title: Director of Safety Job Type: Full time
About the position. NMA is seeking a Director of Safety to manage the association’s programs and advocacy on public policies related to mine safety and health standards and regulations.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop and manage association’s public policies that advance the safety and health performance of the US mining industry, including advocacy before Congress and in response to Executive branch regulatory initiatives.
- Develop the technical and policy basis to support the association’s policy positions relative to safety initiatives arising under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act;
- Provide consultation to corporate personnel, safety, health and human resource departments on compliance with safety and health laws and regulations;
- Provide consultation to corporate personnel, safety, health and human resource departments on the development and management of safety and health management systems, particularly the association’s CORESafety framework;
- Manage the association sponsored Sentinels of Safety program;
- Serve as principal liaison with NMA’s Safety and Health Committee to develop consensus positions on policy and responses to rulemaking;
- Assist the association’s General Counsel in management of litigation arising from mine safety regulatory proceedings;
- Management of NMA’s mine safety regulatory and litigation budgets.
Qualifications
College degree required with minimum of three-years’ experience in public policy development. A public health or industrial hygiene degree is preferred but not required. Knowledge of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act and their implementation is required. Knowledge of systems management and specifically, safety and health management systems not a prerequisite but strongly preferred. Strong analytical, written and oral communication skills are necessary. The position requires personal initiative, ability to negotiate across a wide-range of constituencies, timeliness, professional discretion and decisiveness. A willingness to travel and visit mines, both on the surface and underground is required.
