WTOP: 5 ways nonprofits can…
Zion Church is a movement helping people EXPERIENCE God, ENGAGE in community, be EQUIPPED for ministry, and EMPOWERED to serve across various locations and technologies. A Christian, non-denominational, “seeker sensitive” church that intentionally embraces an all-are-welcome and nontraditional culture, Zion Church helps people become committed followers of Jesus Christ by serving the needs of its members, attenders, and communities through local, national, and international outreach and missions. Since its first gathering in 2000, under the leadership of its Senior Pastor, Zion Global has grown to over 5,000 members, four physical campus locations throughout the Washington DC metropolitan area (Fort Washington, Greenbelt, and Landover MD, and Woodbridge, VA), and a dynamic virtual campus where thousands of online attenders meet weekly (Zion Anywhere).
As it continues to experience significant growth and build upon its strengths, Zion Church has exclusively retained Nonprofit HR to assist in its search for an experienced Chief Operating Officer (COO). The COO is responsible and accountable for the operational direction and performance of Zion Church. The COO actively engages in providing oversight to accomplish efficiencies and cost savings for each facet of the organization’s operations. To ensure excellence for Zion’s service delivery infrastructure, the COO will work collaboratively with IT, Finance, Human Resources, Facilities, Multimedia Services, Communications and Marketing, and the physical campus operations staff members. This is accomplished by creating an organizational culture of compliance, effective governance and participative management. The COO reports directly to the Senior Pastor (CEO) and is a member of the executive team.
The COO creates structures to support operational effectiveness and efficiencies, establishes performance metrics around Zion’s 7 vital signs and 5 critical standards to drive increased quality and responsiveness to the needs of the organization’s stakeholders, and maintains a working knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws to ensure a compliant, honest, and ethical work environment. The COO mentors and develops the senior leadership team, creates the organization’s succession plan, optimizes its continuity of operations, and provides oversight of vendor and contractor services. In addition to the day to day operational needs of Zion Church, the COO is responsible for large-scale projects including construction buildouts and church-wide events, in partnership with the Chief Ministry Officer.
