A resourceful place

Nonprofit HR’s Blog

In case you haven’t heard it, we’ll say it again: there’s no time like now to seek a job in the nonprofit sector. For the last eight years, we have conducted an annual survey to assess employment trends in the nonprofit sector, and our 2015 results were released earlier this month.

One of the biggest takeaways from the 2015 Nonprofit Employment Practice Survey results was this: nonprofits are projecting job growth in 2015 that could outpace the corporate sector. But in case that isn’t enough to convince you to think about building a career at a nonprofit, consider this:

NONPROFITS ARE EMPLOYMENT POWERHOUSES

The nonprofit sector is an employment powerhouse – it is the third largest employment sector in the U.S., employing 10.7 million people. Only retail and manufacturing employ more individuals. Yet, many overlook nonprofits when they’re considering their career path. From our data, we can extrapolate that half of nonprofit organizations nationwide are looking to hire. That’s roughly one million organizations expanding and at least one million job opportunities.

NONPROFITS GIVE YOU THE CHANCE TO TRY YOUR HAND IN SOMETHING NEW

Are you looking to try something different? Are you ready for a change? The nonprofit sector is the perfect place to build a new skill or competency. While most imagine direct service roles when they think of nonprofits, there are many interesting infrastructure and support roles available in the sector as well, including positions in finance, marketing, design, fundraising and more.

NONPROFIT JOBS CAN BE LUCRATIVE

Banish the old stereotype that says nonprofit work can’t pay well. As Barbara Lehrer noted in an article about our survey published Thursday 3/19 in Fortune Magazine, “Not all nonprofits are alike. Some of the very large ones can match the compensation that business offers.”

NONPROFITS ALLOW YOU TO DO GOOD

Who doesn’t want to leave work at the end of every day feeling like they’ve made a difference? That’s what a career in the nonprofit sector provides.
