The National Abortion Federation (NAF) is the professional association of abortion providers. NAF is a 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to ensuring that abortion is safe, legal, and accessible. Our dynamic and innovative programs span a wide range of services designed to meet the unique needs of abortion providers and patients. NAF members include clinics, hospitals, and physicians’ offices who together care for more than half the women who choose abortion in the U.S. and Canada each year. Our members also include public hospitals and both public and private clinics in Mexico City and private clinics in Colombia.
As NAF continues to experience significant growth and build upon its unique strengths, a search is underway for an experienced visionary Chief Operating Officer (COO). NAFhas exclusively retained Nonprofit HR to assist in the recruitment efforts for its next COO. The COO is responsible for managing the organization’s internal operations, administrative functions, and Human Resources needs, including taking a leadership role in developing, implementing, and overseeing operational systems, processes, procedures, and compliance. Areas of responsibility also include office management and information technology¸ including database management. The COO reports directly to the President & CEO and is part of the senior management team.
Success in this role requires a strong commitment to a woman’s right to choose abortion and cultural sensitivity with the emotional intelligence to work in an environment that promotes diversity and equity. The COO must have demonstrated the capacity to work effectively with culturally diverse staff and populations, with the ability to be inclusive and respectful of differences.
The COO will also oversee the Human Resources department through the Sr. Director of Human Resources. The CEO will oversee the development of the organization’s plans and programs as a strategic partner, particularly from the perspective of the impact on people. In concert with the Sr. Director of Human Resources, the COO evaluates and advises on the impact of long-range planning of new programs/strategies and regulatory action as those items affect the attraction, motivation, development and retention of the people resources of the organization.
The COO also oversees IT for the organization and is responsible for the ongoing development and operation of financial and CRM databases and developing systems to ensure efficient record keeping and accountability. Ongoing and sustainable IT infrastructure are essential to the work of NAF. The COO is responsible for ensuring that IT infrastructure supports current, ongoing, and future business needs. It will be the COO’s responsibility to develop the IT team and build their capacity to keep up with the business needs of internal departments and members.
The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in one of the following disciplines: i.e. Business Management, Organizational Effectiveness, Nonprofit Management, Communications, or related field, and a minimum of 10 years of management experience of which at least five years should include executive administration and operations experience including significant leadership and management experience. The COO must also have passion for our Mission, Vision, and work. The COO must have experience creating and maintaining an organizational culture that attracts, motivates, and retains a diverse, talented staff to blend skill sets, meet objectives, and provide efficient program execution. The ideal candidate has experience managing an international organization and has proven success developing and keeping a remote workforce engaged.
