ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

For the last 40 years, Neighborhood Housing Services of Birmingham (NHSB) has worked to give families the tools they need to emerge from poverty and achieve financial stability. The Board of Directors and staff of NHSB are passionate, committed professionals dedicated to helping stabilize urban neighborhoods in and around the City of Birmingham by promoting personal financial empowerment and home ownership. The future of NHSB as a leading non-profit housing organization that has shaped partnerships between local residents, financial institutions, businesses, and government entities, is about sustainable financial growth that promotes community development for the benefit of the residents of Birmingham, Alabama.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for providing programmatic and financial leadership for NHSB and works with the Board of Directors, staff and partners to establish, lead and monitor the accomplishment of short and long-range goals, strategies, plans and policies for the organization. The CEO is responsible for the day-to-day oversight, management and administration of the organization, its budget and its staff of six, and for supporting the Board with fulfilling its governance and legal obligations. Ultimately, the CEO is responsible for NHSB’s consistent achievement of its mission and for conducting business in a manner consistent with the organization’s mission, vision and values.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) reporting to the Board of Directors must be a highly collaborative, strategic and transformational leader to lead the organization to and through its next phase of development. The CEO will convene and leverage current relationships and build new business partnerships with private, public, national and local government entities, community leaders, developers, and other nonprofit organizations to grow its programmatic reach and increase and diversify the financial capacity and resource development of NHSB. The CEO will have demonstrated successes in leading a growing organization through the expansion of new and current programs and services.

The CEO will work effectively and collaboratively across the organization and with the Board of Directors to lead, engage, expand, and deliver on the short and long-term strategic plans. The CEO will inspire best work from others; build and sustain a network of those whose interests are related and affected by common concerns and aspirations; bring thought-leadership and action to matters that require attention and decision; and provide forward-looking direction and context that enables others to see the future that lies ahead for the organization. As the next CEO of this small nonprofit, this position is an opportunity for a strong, business-minded, change-agent to chart a successful course for NHSB.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate will have a degree in relevant discipline from an accredited college or university and minimum of 5 years of proven executive management experience in housing, community and/or economic development. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated experience working in close partnership with an active Board of Directors. The CEO will also have proven leadership, organizational and administrative competencies; the ability to develop, communicate and pursue a vision for the organization; substantive experience in housing/community/ development initiatives, specifically, affordable housing and/or homeownership; ability to conceptualize and leverage programs and services; the ability to manage and inspire talented staff and build capacity for organization; deep-rooted relevant knowledge and the ability to influence and expand relationships with multiple stakeholders; proven success in fundraising and grant writing; exceptional interpersonal skills and leadership presence.
