WTOP: 5 ways nonprofits can…
Design Impact is a nonprofit social innovation firm based in Cincinnati, Ohio. We use design to address pressing community issues, equip leaders, and inspire communities. We’ve partnered with hundreds of organizations from Cincinnati to San Diego, tackling complex social challenges as diverse as health disparity, food access, organizational culture, and early education.
Our work is rooted in our belief that sustainable social change lies at the intersection of creativity, equity, and leadership. This unique combination of perspectives is highly effective in empowering individuals and teams to develop innovative, collaborative, and inclusive practices in their work. We measure our impact by evaluating how people’s mindsets, actions, and conditions change over time.
For conditions to change, we must first change our actions and mindsets. We are researchers, designers, educators, community organizers, and social entrepreneurs. Addressing complex social issues requires knowledge across sectors, and we pride ourselves on the diversity of our expertise.
Since co-founding Design Impact in 2009, Kate Hanisian has grown the organization from a small idea to a full-fledged public interest design firm. Her commitment to the common good extends through her work on racial equity and innovative forms of collaborative leadership. As Design Impact’s Executive Director, she has spent 11 years working around the country to redesign organizations and social systems from a creative and equitable lens. Her journey has focused on creating and facilitating inclusive processes that spark social change. She is passionate about working across boundaries in honest and imaginative ways.
Our next Executive Director must be a strategic thinker and have the ability to create and sustain organizational partnerships and manage day-to-day operations and staff. They must be a hands-on leader with a commitment to moral leadership and integrity, with values rooted in the principles of shared power. The Executive Director must have the ability to inspire and be able to demonstrate passion for social justice issues and employ an inclusive leadership style to foster creativity among staff. Success in this role requires a deep commitment to the mission of Design Impact, a leader that can see past existing systems and structures, and use lived experience to imagine Design Impact as an integral part of the broader racial and economic justice movement to ensure that communities of color around the country are defining and living into their visions for their own liberation.
